Dancing? I was going to suggest capoeira to replace jiu-jitsu because it's basically a martial art disguised as acrobatic dance (as far as I know)

Be patient with yourself. You will get back to things in time. My dad had 9 strokes and many TIAs, and for the most part until the last few year of his life we were able to rehab him back to most functions. They could never put my dad in the clot busting drug because of most if his strokes being bleeds.

Partnered dancing was the passion hobby that was "taken away" from me after a bad accident for several years. I can dance again and it's very different. It's not with the same intuitive flow I use to have before my body changed. I feel for you, Jo. The front range of Colorado has a multitude of great dance scenes, I hope you find venues and events you enjoy!

A person you might contact is Viktoria Modesta. She's 5 years older than you. Her left leg was damaged by an incompetent doctor when she was born. She had it amputated below the knee in 2007. She's a dancer, musician, artist, clothing designer, actor. She designs and makes her own prosthetic legs and clothes. You can see some of her work in the second episode of season three of "Killjoys". All the legs and clothes she wears in the episode are her own stuff. Since you've had so much trouble getting legs that fit well, perhaps she might be able to help with her experience making her own? You mentioned being unable to draw a straight line. How about an "old school" drafting table and arm? Since it's adjustable to all angles it doesn't have to be used just for mechanical drawings. It can be used to hold drawing tools like French Curves in place. Combine use of the tools with freehand. Adapt and overcome!

Jo, keep listening to what your body is telling you, and do NOT take any chances! Get your backside to the hospital if you even vaguely think that there might be something going sideways. Having said that, you are doing so well! Yes, there are days when you think you've gone backwards, but that is normal. Now, give your furbabies hugs and skritches from me, and keep looking after one of my favourite people. <3

For the drawing part, consider painting, there's a girl with cerebral palsy who paints. And it's a lot of fun sometimes to make a vangoh esque painting where you don't need every line to be exact. Might help the art feel better. I don't know if you'll even see this, but I want to ask about joint hypermobility, just in case because people with hypermobility can be more prone to getting aortic dissections. And so, I'm wondering if it's related. Glad you're doing better!

Two or three weeks ago i was watching a program when a commercial came on. It was for a migraine medicine. At the end of the commercial there was a whole line of people sitting and standing representing people who use the medicine. All of a sudden I said out loud, " That looks like Footless Jo." If it was not you it was your twin. I am so glad you are doing better. And starting to cope with what has happened.

Like I said before, I have had two strokes and understand the recovery mindset you must take up if you want to regain at least fractional use of limbs, balance, speech and return to pre stroke functionality. I cannot say with any accuracy that your doctors said the same thing to you, but mine said that with patience and a great deal of slow slogging work I could get back to 95% of normal forme. I would *NEVER GET BACK TO 100%*. I proceeded to prove them wrong. I was back to what I judged to be100% and in less time and less slogging than they told me it was gonna take. As long as, Jo, you keep your eyes on the prize, there is no reason you cannot do what I did. Now, get your determined ass to work. We love you. RGB3

I'm so glad you're doing so much better. Healing from something major can be so much slower than we want it to be. I also have to chime in that I can't believe no one called 911. As someone trained in CPR/First Aid, it's shocking that not only didn't they call, they just let you go home.

It is really messed up, that US-americans are so comfortable with not calling ambulances. In other countries that's actually a criminal offense. I really don't know what to say, I keep starting sentences only to delete them again. You guys need to fix your healthcare system. Anyway, I am really glad to hear and see, that you are doing better.

Glad to get some mostly good news from you! You're an inspiration and I'm sorry you had to go through all of that and still are going through now. Denial is an interesting thing. Personally, I only realized I was disabled while I was following a Psychology class that addresses disability and handicap. I was suddenly wondering: "Wait, I am disabled?" and when I was asked my psychiatrist she answered: "Well, obviously!". My brain did not compute that me being disabled due to PTSD, CPTSD and a pletora of orthopedic issues meant I was actually disabled. Sounds really, really dumb right now but I guess I was in denial.

That gym should be shut down, at the very least it should be named and shamed. I don’t care what kind of waiver they get people to sign, if your business facilitates a potentially highly dangerous activity you have a responsibility to AT THE VERY LEAST recognize emergencies and call 911. That’s the bare minimum for like everyone. Concert venues have security. Ski resorts have rescuers and medics. That gym didn’t even have one guy with common sense looking out for you.

Jo, the way you described dancing makes it sound so bad-ass. Like you're training to do coordinated fight scenes for an action movie. And though it's not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of dance, it makes sense! It can give you very good control over your body and very good understanding of your dance partner's movements, so here's hoping you can work your way up to some satisfying moves :) Glad you're recovering, and Abby is a BAMF! See you in the next one ♥

I have had so many bad experiances with bad health care that when I actually was dying(I have a ventrical shunt that started leaking to the point that it was a wound), I waited 8 hours before going to the hosital. I just wanted to "sleep and puke in peace"(that was what I told my boyfriend at the time, I don´t remember this). I didn´t want to go to the er because I knew I woulg just be sent home we argued that whole night untill it was morning and I finally agreed to let his mother drive us. At this point I was shaking trying to puke and haluceniting, I don´t remember much but I do remember theese upper middle aged doctors comming in to the room taking one look at me and turning white as sheets. And let me tell you when a neuro doctor looks at you as if they have seen a ghost, you know it´s bad. My fever was spiking around 41.6 c (108,8f) 6 hours after ariving at the hospital I was on the operating table.

I got to the point where you're talking about how much you love jiu-jitsu. That's... terrible, that you've lost that. You could look into jiu-jitsu choreography, like for movies or stage or even just exhibitions. You could look into fighting games, even working on designing and developing your own game that focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than other martial arts, or even community activism/outreach around the sport. Lots of good opportunities for you to try to improve safety training and "spotting the signs" for other dojo senseis, and spreading the knowledge about this, as well as other injuries that might come to your mind. You can still be a part of the community and share your love of the sport, even if you can't compete or ever train in any significant capacity.

I join with all the others who are horrified that an ambulance wasn't called for you, Jo. I also understand the grief of losing a person (yourself that used to be) that you and others have experienced. I understand to a small extent as I've had consequences of surgery that are not visible. I won't say I'm not believed because primary care doc did refer me to heart, lung, and pain docs and phys. therapy; but because I couldn't describe what was happening in terms medical professionals could understand, and no tests could prove my limitations, I have just decided to live with my limitations and realize I just can't do what I used to. The difference with me from you, Jo, and the others who replied, is that I'm not a young person, I'm a senior citizen. So all my symptoms fit right in with the senior community. Of course all this started 14 years ago when I wasn't such an old lady. I recognize how many people there are who have had unproductive experiences with the health care system. I pray for you, them, and myself.

Oh my, Jo… hearing you talk about your experience was so relatable for me. I am so grateful to know you are recovering well. Being down for an hour, and no one called for an ambulance, I felt the fear for you. I am astounded that you went home and had no medical care for days. Your recovery is a testament to your health and perseverance. I admire your mental toughness. About having to give up Jiu-Jitsu, after I had to give up swimming, due to a sensitivity to chlorine, I have since said it was like losing a lover at the height of an affair. My heart goes out to you for this profound loss. I have never found something else to substitute, and your dive into dancing sounds fantastic. I hope you end up loving it. Welcome back! 💚

Neurological issues are terrifying. I was 2 weeks on a new medication and all of a sudden my brain felt like 7 different kinds of soup in a fishbowl and the soup wasn’t mixing at all. I was stopped at a stoplight and I could only figure out how to keep my foot on the break. Thankfully the bus stop was right next to my car and the people who were waiting were curious enough to ask if I was ok. A guy opened my passenger door and put my car in park while others called 911. I couldn’t walk, could only speak one word responses. We still don’t know what exactly happened but a year and a half later I still don’t feel real. Best of luck with your health journey.
